Dear Sir,
I write to you as a member of the Australian football family regarding my football brother,
Hakeem al-Araibi. As you are aware, Hakeem has been granted asylum by Australia and is
currently detained by Thai authorities pending possible extradition to your country, Bahrain.
I hereby express my concern that Hakeem is not being provided public support and advocacy
by the AFC, am extremely worried about his wellbeing if extradited to Bahrain and expect
the AFC to publicly support and advocate for his return to Australia under internationally
recognised human rights law stipulated in FIFA’s Human Rights Policy 2017 and the AFC
Statutes 2018.

Accordingly, I submit the following questions:

1. As Vice President of FIFA, do you endorse FIFA’s call for Hakeem to be allowed safe
return to Australia?
2. As President of the AFC, do you support the immediate return of Hakeem to Australia
under the AFC Human Rights provisions?
3. What actions are you taking to uphold Hakeem’s human rights including advocating for
the Bahraini Government to withdraw their extradition order? Will you publish these actions
and their chronology as a matter of transparency for the football community?
4. Will you issue an immediate statement on behalf of the AFC calling for Hakeem al-
Araibi’s release and safe return to Australia pursuant to your obligations as President of the
AFC?
The position of AFC President now carries a non-negotiable obligation to do everything
possible to uphold the human rights of all in football.
If, as President, you feel unable to fulfil these duties, you should immediately resign and
allow the position to be conducted in accordance with its obligations under Article 3 of both
the FIFA and AFC Statutes.

Yours in Football,

Concerned Member of Hakeem al-Araibi’s Australian Football Family
